Lip Lift or Targeted Lip-Building Training?

A lip lift promises fuller lips with a small incision — but the procedure carries risks and late effects. Why natural muscle building is the wiser choice in the long run.

The short answer first: a lip lift raises the upper lip with a small incision, but it remains a permanent surgical procedure with possible consequences such as scars, numbness, and restricted expression. Targeted training of the lip and mouth muscles, by contrast, builds volume naturally, without surgery and without scars.

A Small Procedure — with Big Consequences?

Many believe a lip lift is a harmless little procedure. A quick incision, a fast effect — and the lips are supposed to look more youthful, fuller, more sensual.

That is exactly what countless images and videos on platforms like YouTube, Instagram, or TikTok show: young women with a freshly raised upper lip, seemingly presenting a perfect result with no effort at all.

But what looks so simple at first glance is in truth far more complex. For older women, or for very thin lips, the results are often considerably less spectacular — because a serious surgeon has to proceed carefully and with restraint here to preserve a natural result.

The reality: not every face is suited to a lip lift, and not every expectation can be met as effortlessly as social media suggests. Often this is exactly where a journey begins that later ends with scars, feelings of tightness, restricted expression, possible late effects — and the bitter realisation: natural methods would have been the better choice.

Lip Lift: A Fast Effect — but Not Entirely Without Risk

In a lip lift, a narrow strip of skin between the nose and the upper lip is removed. The upper lip is visually raised, the distance to the nose shortened, and more of the red of the lip made visible.

The result can be convincing at first glance and often looks spectacular, especially on social media. But as with any surgical procedure, there are possible risks and long-term aspects here too that should be considered.

Possible risks of a lip lift:

  • Visible or thickened scars
  • Asymmetrical lip shape
  • Over- or under-correction
  • Sensory disturbances or limited mobility
  • Infections, persistent swelling, or feelings of tightness
  • Changes that become more noticeable with age
  • A lack of long-term studies on late effects

Even though many procedures go well, it is important to understand: a lip lift is a permanent procedure whose results cannot simply be reversed.

The Quiet Danger: Does Less Movement Lead to Faster Decline?

What many do not consider: after a lip lift the mouth area is often moved less, unconsciously — whether out of fear of tightness, an unfamiliar pull at the scar, or because the lips feel different.

This raises a legitimate question: can a lack of movement, over the long term, encourage the breakdown of the lip and mouth musculature — and could the operation accelerate the natural aging process?

Important to know: these effects occur anyway in the course of natural aging. With increasing age, muscle, connective tissue, and bone structure lose volume and resilience — a completely normal biological process. The decisive question, however, is: to what extent could these processes be intensified or made visible prematurely after an operation?

Possible changes are:

  • Weakening of the lip musculature
  • Loss of resilience in the connective tissue
  • Recession of the bone substance in the midface
  • Drooping corners of the mouth
  • Deepening of the wrinkles around the mouth

How strongly such effects appear depends on many factors: your individual anatomy, the course of healing, your personal movement habits — and of course the surgical technique chosen. One thing is certain: targeted movement and conscious training of the facial muscles are the key to actively countering these natural processes — with or without a surgical procedure.

Procedures and Their Invisible Consequences: Muscle, Lymph, Trends

The Lymphatic Pathways — Often Underestimated

The lymphatic pathways of the upper lip run superficially between the skin and the muscle. They drain tissue fluid and immune cells into the submandibular lymph nodes. A surgical procedure can disturb or damage these fine lymphatic pathways, which can lead to lymphatic congestion, persistent swelling, and feelings of tightness. These risks are rare, but not impossible — and treating such side effects is often challenging.

Not Every Lip Lift Is the Same

There are different techniques for the bullhorn lip lift:

1. Superficial lip lift (without muscle involvement):

  • Only skin and tissue are removed.
  • The muscle remains untouched.
  • Still possible: tightness, scar pull, fine restrictions of movement.
  • A visible scar remains beneath the nose.
  • Targeted lip- and face-building training may be possible — but is not guaranteed.

2. Lip lift with muscle plication or muscle shortening:

  • A deeper intervention in the orbicularis oris muscle.
  • A higher risk of expression disturbances, muscle tension, and scarring.
  • Targeted face- and lip-building training is usually no longer possible.

Trends Come and Go — the Operation Stays

Dr Kopelman, an experienced surgeon, emphasises: a lip lift — like any surgical procedure — can leave lasting traces. Young people in particular should be cautious, because: "Aesthetic trends come and go — the change stays."

What is more, the procedure does not stop the natural aging process. The skin and tissue around the operated zone keep aging — sometimes more visibly and less harmoniously.

The Better Choice: The FACE Method®

With my FACE Method® I offer targeted, healthy building and strength training for the lips, mouth, and face — without surgery, without scars, with visible results.

Advantages of the FACE Method®:

  • Natural building of the lip musculature for more volume
  • Strengthening of the bone substance in the midface
  • Promotion of circulation and skin renewal
  • Adaptation to every face shape and every age
  • Lasting rejuvenation through real strengthening of muscle and tissue
  • No risks, no scars, no late effects

Your face stays mobile, vital, and naturally beautiful — and can be actively supported for a lifetime.

Conclusion: Beauty Is Not a Trend — It Is Your Personal Journey

A lip lift may seem tempting. But anyone who wants lasting, natural beauty chooses a path that strengthens and preserves their own anatomy.

Beauty is not a race. Beauty is your conscious journey. Walk that path with strength — with the power of your own face.
